TDS as far as we know needs to be deployed locally, and to do that would require getting a foothold across the galactic gap and against a force they can barely fight and who have a massive energy advantage on them
Avatar
and we already know that you can punch right through TDS with enough energy behind your terraport; no reason something else with a ton of energy wouldn't be able to.

I find it really hard to believe that Australia's government is accidentally this stupid.

What joys are they giving us today?
Avatar
That anti-encryption law.
Avatar
Anyone else playing Stellaris 2.2?
Avatar
Oh, that I find very easy to believe, given that they've tried this several times before and so have other major governments.
12:21
That said, while I'm sure a contributing factor to it is the same kind of we-can-legislate-reality stupidity that once led to bills setting pi to 3, there are some other explanations that also fit: 1. "We're the government; we don't have to give a shit about anyone else's privacy". and 2. "The point is not to ban encryption; the point is being able to prosecute anyone who uses encryption, in our never-ending quest to make sure we've got something to charge everyone with just in case we want to."
Avatar
You know, if you think about it, all these explanations are terrible for everyone else (well, in Australia, or actually most western countries). Yay!

You're more likely to be elected if you're better at manipulating people/are charismatic/whatever, and the amount of people who actually notice "hey, this law is impossible to implement and stupid" is much smaller than the amount of voters.

Seems more belike like politicians being unable to deal with the fact that the internet isn't the real world in terms of security and accessability public-versus-private, TBH.

And instead of adapting to how ultimately the internet just has to work, they try to force the internet to behave like physical reality.
13:13
Also, if the law passes... give it a month until the first big data breach scandal.
13:13
A year until they have to revoke it because every single hacker on the globe will thoroughly demonstrate why having backdoors in encryption is a bad idea.

12:53
>Wow, they must have hired the budget architect. Dude isn't even considering having the grocery store roof rated for emergency DropShip landings. A DropShip on top of a grocery store of all things would be insane. You build the fencing and walls around the parking lot so that they can endure the launch and landing blasts from the rockets, and make said parking lots big enough that you can park... I think three Overlords at once should suffice. SLDF is combined arms, which means armor units that won't have jumpers to get down from the roof. You need to plan these things with consideration for the forces being deployed, after all. Trying to stick a DropShip on the roof of a grocery store is the sort of impulsive city planning that leads to the hot mess that the Caliph is running.
Avatar
My primary concern - how the fuck did the Atlas get on the roof?

Notable for being one of the most successful light cavalry charges in history, despite it being in World War 1 and directly at machine guns. Pulled off by a combination of sheer nerve, a solid understanding of both the aussie and the turkish/german capabilities, skillful use of local conditions and for want of a better word the then current 'battle meta', and someone who knew their history lessons. That is: if a gerund turns a verb into a noun, what turns a noun into a verb?

Further research has elucidated the answer: "denominal verb"

I'm sure there's a reason for that, but it sure sounds like one of those dumb laws.
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:04 PM
IIRC it has to do with how itā€™s legally considered pest control and not hunting
Avatar

So are you also not allowed to grind up termites into a tasty* protein-filled snack? :V
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:06 PM

Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:09 PM
Sure, nobody would want to do it, but if the law is applied consistently it would make sense for that dubious activity to also be illegal.
19:11
Also, if they're pests, why shouldn't you hunt them?
19:11
Presumably there're enough of them for them to be pests, and you're killing them anyway.
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:14 PM
I mean you do, itā€™s commonly colloquially called ā€œhog huntingā€, but itā€™s legally distinct from the way hunting is managed by the State
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:15 PM

Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:16 PM
Yeah I went and doubled checked, look like itā€™s not a thing.
Avatar
The main reason you donā€™t eat pests is that it incentivises breeding more pests
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:17 PM
If you're breeding them, they're livestock, not pests.
Avatar
Or creating conditions where more of them show up, same thing
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:18 PM
It would be wild management like deer, presumably
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:19 PM
If you're letting your livestock roam free over other people's property, that's at least rude and probably illegal too, so it takes care of itself.
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:20 PM
Itā€™s extremely hard to contain hogs, and in many parts of Texas deer and other animals already do that. Once again though, these wouldnā€™t be live stock. Theyā€™d be game
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:22 PM
1. You shouldn't hunt pests, because that incentivises making more pests 2. If you're making things easier for an animal population with the intent of eating them, they're not pests but livestock 3. Therefore, hunting pests leads instead to keeping livestock
19:23
You are presumably liable for the containment of your livestock, no?
Avatar
Hard to prove theyā€™re yours.
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:24 PM
If the penalties for failing to contain hogs are sufficiently high, people will either contain their hogs or not risk keeping them.
19:24

MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:26 PM

Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:28 PM

Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:28 PM
I just feel like this is the kind of problem which is at least capable of solving itself, with a few careful definitions.
Avatar
MarcusAurelius 12/24/2018 7:30 PM
Yeah, thatā€™s why weā€™re killing as many of the things as we can. Theyā€™re not worth the damage they cause
Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/24/2018 7:31 PM

And the vultures wouldn't get lead poisoning :V
Avatar
Morgrim Moon 12/24/2018 7:32 PM
Hunters here have been caught letting small hogs out of traps or leaving sows alone so there will be more hogs to shoot later, so yeah it can lead to bad incentives. (They'll legal to shoot because there is an extermination campaign)

KSP is surprisingly good at running on low end systems as long as youā€™re parts efficient

It still runs through battery like no-sophont's business.

Avatar
0111narwhalz 12/26/2018 3:36 PM
But then again, the only laptops I've used are workstation models with old batteries, which are far from the most efficient in terms of power to gaming performance.
15:37
(well, them and little netbooks that can barely run their OS)

Like 100%-~20% battery in 15-30 minutes.

selling upgrade kits seems more likely. Keep your body, get the new and shiny features

And then let you get a shitty shell for the two weeks it takes to cook.
Avatar
Morgrim Moon 01/04/2019 7:12 AM
there might be mid-level bodies that are more basic kits you then customise to taste, rather than bespoke. Sort of like buying a suit off the rack and getting it tailored is cheaper than made to measure, but gives very nice results
Avatar
Fair.
Avatar
Personally I would always argue that you have the implicit right to have your body restored provided a template for its construction exists, and that that body was destroyed in an accident.
07:35
You didn't choose to loose the body by choice, after all. That's unwillfull restriction of morphological freedom.
Avatar
Well, I don't really think that applies in an eldraic context beyond the extent to which you have insurance/regular money to pay for it.
07:37
Your body is exactly as sacred as any other possession.
07:37
Except in as much as you need it to live.
07:37
So while you def should be able to (And I don't see why you wouldn't)
07:38
I don't think there's a sacred right demanding you have the body you want beyond "You can hire a bored person with a bio-printer/vat complex/w/e to make it") (edited)
Avatar
@Archon I think you have the right to have the body of your choice insofar as: a.) you did not abandon your previous body willingly or by the consequences of your own actions b.) That the manufacturer chose to abandon line manufacture doesn't mean people who lost their chassis due to accidents and do not wish to chose a different (and/or more expensive) successor model forfeit their right to have it replaced (and be that by commissioned manufacture through a different entity.)
07:46
That's personal oppinion I should stress, but it's both logical and seems consistent with Eldrae thinking.
Avatar
... I really understand where you're coming from.
07:47
But I don't see that as the holy law that would shine through the generally pretty hands-off eldrae government?
07:48
Like, your right to re-buy the same car when your old one breaks down?

Avatar
Enderminion 01/04/2019 7:49 AM

Avatar
Intuitive and associative physical avatar, I should add.
07:49
Noticably, the Eldrae society at large is still very much physical-slanted, and doesn't treat bodies as opportunistic mobility plattforms.
07:49
No further and, @Enderminion. Your and Archon's position does not logically follow for me.
07:50
It's trying to oversimplify an issue for convinience when in extension of ethics, it isn't as functionally simple as you try to treat it.
07:51
Or, if we were to reslant it into the Eldrae, they are a physically post-scarcity society and the refusal to replace a body destroyed in an accident is supremely assholish and unnessecary behavior of the IP parties involved.
07:51
Making it the same situation as how to deal with people who went bankrupt.
Avatar
Indeed, it would be deeply assholish.
07:53
But the eldrae do not legislate away people's ability to be assholes.
07:54
(In general, uh, that's what insurance is for, also?)
Avatar
Morgrim Moon 01/04/2019 7:59 AM
except if you're compelling someone to manufacture something for you, that's super against eldrae values

08:01
I think IP expires comparatively quickly, so if you want to take a now free to use older pattern and do what you will with it, that's one thing. But if someone hand crafts a limited run of a particular sleeve, and then through no fault of your own you are struck by a meteor and have your sleeve destroyed, you can't demand they make you a new body OR that they cough up their still-protected IP, because that's choice-theft

Their "mission": KotakuInAction is a platform for open discussion of the issues where gaming, nerd culture, the Internet, and media collide. We believe that the current standards of ethics in the media have alienated the artists, developers, and creators who perpetuate the things we love, enjoy, and enthusiastically build communities around. We have observed numerous incidents involving conflicts of interest and agenda-pushing within media which we feel are damaging to the credibility of the medium and harm the community at large. We believe much of the current media is complicit in the proliferation of an ideology that squashes individuality, divides along political lines, and is stifling to the freedom of creativity that is the foundation of human expression. KotakuInAction is a community that condemns willful censorship, exclusion, harassment, and abuse. It is a community that organizes to hold the media accountable to the concept of artistic freedom by standing up for the artist, the developer, the writer, the filmmaker, and all who enjoy the freedom to create, explore, and expand. It is a community that allows the exchange of information, supports the ongoing discussion of media ethics, and protects the right of the individual to embrace their personal interests in entertainment and fandom. KotakuInAction is built around a core focus on reasonable, friendly discussion of the issues related to gaming culture, and those involved in it. That is not all we are about, but it's where we began and will remain our core. We hold ourselves to be politically neutral ground, not forcing anyone to conform in their opinions, and permitting a wide variety of viewpoints to express themselves in a civil manner.

On earlier points: 1. Replacing your body if it is accidentallied is what incarnation insurance is for. There are no freebies, inasmuch as "freebie" is short for "make someone else pay for it". (If you bought cheap incarnation insurance, it may only cover bringing you back as an infomorph, and if you bought no incarnation insurance, then you're stuck hoping that some generous soph will pay to have you brought out of dead storage. So keep up your incarnation cover, folks.) 2. You don't have an automatic right to replace anything that someone else has to make for you, obviously. On the other hand, unless you're running around in a body that's a copyrighted artistic work (and less than 144 years old) or a hand-build custom job, it is very likely that you bought a perpetual license and need only call the local fab shop. (Or your incarnation insurer will do so.) 3. Even if you are an exception to the above, there are plenty of body hotels out there renting out inexpensive vatjobs of a variety of common clades, because if you just need to take a quick meeting on an outer-system moon one afternoon, it's a bit precious to send, grow, and dispose of the details of your very own small intestine, etc., just for that. 4. "doesn't treat bodies as opportunistic mobility plattforms" Er, who said? Most people tend to stick to one primary body or primary body design, certainly, because it's theirs , and thus comfortable, the same way most people prefer to live in their own houses, drive their own cars, use their own computers, and wear their own pants. But that doesn't stop anyone from renting a vatjob for a day trip, or a specialized body for a specialized purpose.
